Nestled in the heart of Westwood Village at 1010 Broxton Ave, Mr. Rice stands out as a vibrant and authentic Chinese rice restaurant that expertly showcases the bold yet nuanced flavors of Yunnan and broader Chinese regional cuisine. From the moment you step inside, the cozy, no-frills setting invites you to focus on what truly matters: deeply satisfying, soul-warming dishes crafted with care and tradition.
Mr. Rice excels in delivering a diverse menu centered around rice and mixian (云南米线), with each dish boasting fresh, vibrant ingredients and an exceptional balance of flavors. Signature offerings like the Kimchi Beef Mixian Spicy present a perfect harmony between the gentle tartness of kimchi and tender brisket chunks in a light, comforting broth. It's a refreshing departure from heavier stews — lively but never overwhelming — that keeps customers coming back again and again.
For those who crave a hearty, familiar staple, the braised chicken with rice (黄焖鸡米饭) is a standout: succulent, richly seasoned chicken simmered to perfection, served atop fluffy rice that soaks up every bit of its fragrant sauce. This dish alone earns the restaurant fervent praise for being a genuine comfort food reminiscent of home-cooked meals.
If you're a fan of spice and complexity, the Pork and Tofu Hot Pot and Kimchi Lamb Hot Pot offer incredible depth — featuring layers of textures and tastes from tender meats, fresh vegetables, and aromatic broths, enhanced by subtle spicy heat. Each hot pot is a communal experience, perfect for sharing and exploring diverse flavors bite by bite.
Apart from the savory offerings, Mr. Rice’s beverage selection is equally compelling. Tea lovers consistently praise the jasmine green tea for its potent aroma and clean finish, while the innovative Mango Green Tea Smoothie with Cheese Foam (芝士芒芒) provides an irresistibly creamy, fruity contrast that refreshes the palate in the most delightful way.
Beyond the menu, the atmosphere at Mr. Rice reflects an authentic, lived-in charm — a modest, bustling spot favored by UCLA students and locals alike, with friendly staff who make you feel like a welcomed guest rather than just another customer. Ordering is streamlined through convenient kiosks whether you choose to dine in or pick up, making the experience efficient without compromising the personal warmth of the service.
Longtime patrons like ANTHONY KIM attest to the restaurant’s comforting appeal, especially appreciating the lighter, balanced broths that differentiate Mr. Rice’s mixian dishes from typical spicy stews. Others, such as Abbie and Ngoc Tram Nguyen, emphasize not only the food's satisfying quality but also the fair pricing and generous portions that make it accessible for students and everyday diners. Many revisit often, charmed by the harmony of authentic flavors that are both comforting and excitingly fresh.
Whether you’re seeking a quick, nourishing meal after class or a flavorful exploration of Yunnanese-inspired rice dishes, Mr. Rice offers a rare combination of authenticity, warmth, and affordability just steps away from the UCLA campus. It’s a culinary hidden gem that invites you to savor every bite and rediscover the simple joy of truly thoughtful Chinese comfort food.

The best comfort soup-type of foos in westwood village. I would eat here after class all the time when I lived in Westwood, and I still try and stop by here whenever I'm visiting campus. I love their kimchi beef mixian, not as sour/salty/spicy as a jjigae since the broth is a lot lighter and milder, but it works REALLY well with the chunks of brisket and pieces of kimchi they put in there. I always try to take some home but I never have leftovers, it's THAT comforting (especially on a cold day). Their other menu options including the hot pots and mixians have been great as well, and they always have a daily special. Keep in mind this is not family style but the portions are enormous and you'll very likely have leftovers to take home, so the price is a great value. Finally, the staff are the sweetest people in the world and they're really friendly so try and get to know them! (And they gave me complementary fruit on a hot day lol).
My son suggested this place, and it was great. It's not the usual americanized Chinese restaurant. I don't know which region they're from. I ordered the dry spicy beef noodles. It wasn't very spicy, but it was nicely numbing.
Love love this place. Their jasmine green tea is so good and potent and very cheap. If you’re a tea person and don’t need many toppings and just want quality tea then get it. I always get their spicy beef dry hot pot and the noodles are sooo good. Always a simple yet satisfying dinner. Service is always friendly, and you can order at the kiosk for pickup or dine in.
I and my friends went here frequently when I was still studying at UCLA. We sometimes ordered delivery as well. My favorite dishes were the braised chicken, and tomato noodles soup. And my favorite drink was the mung bean drink which helped me cool down my body. The restaurant was quite small, but the waiters were very nice, and the food portion was big also. I would recommend it
oh my this is really good. Affordable price around UCLA campus. In fact I keep to come back to this place couple times in few days. It’s not nice to someone not speak mandarins or Cantonese tho but worth it a try I mean.
Mr. Rice is my favorite restaurant in Westwood! The service is so friendly and sweet (they’re a mom and pop shop). The shop itself is cozy and food comes out fast. The soup is hearty and flavorful with a generous serving size. My favorites are the double chilli beef and the kimchi beef soup mixian.
